Compounding combines an ageless art with the
latest medical knowledge and state-of-the-art technology, allowing specially
trained professionals to prepare customized medications to meet each
patient’s specific needs.
Let us know how we can help you and the
animals in your care.
Preparation of these specialized medications
requires chemicals and equipment that are not available in most pharmacies.
Our pharmacists have received extensive
additional training in compounding techniques and have a support network
that generates a constant exchange of ideas and innovations. Your questions
are welcome.
We offer solutions to problems by
compounding specialized medications which meet the unique needs of each
animal pets, exotics, horses, or zoo animals.
Flavoured medication
Trying to administer medication to an animal
is not always easy. We prepare medications in easy-to-give flavoured dosage
forms that animals devour: Tuna for cats, liver for dogs, banana or tutti
fruitti for exotics.
Medicine in ideal size, strength, and dosage
form
Commercial animal medications may be
available in only one size or strength. For example, a tablet may be too
large to give to a cat, but an excessive amount may be needed for a horse.
We can create a preparation which contains the most appropriate dosage for a
specific animal. We make medicine much easier to administer and often more
economical. We can compound numerous dosage forms that are just right for
specific animals — from medicated chewable “treats” to liquid concentrates,
from ear drops to dusting powders. The active ingredient can usually be
administered by various routes (oral, transdermal, otic, etc.).
Transdermal Medications
Have you ever thought about applying a
transdermal preparation to the inside of an animal’s ear or another hairless
area as an alternate route for systemic absorption? It’s quick and easy, and
many medications are compatible with transdermal bases. Transdermal delivery
is particularly useful for animals who should not be stressed due to
cardiovascular or hypertensive illness. Also, it is appreciated by owners
who no longer have to deal with an animal that resists being medicated, and
the resulting scratches! We can also prepare topical medications for
application at the site of inflammation or infection.
Unavailable Medication?
Manufacturers often stop producing medicines
and dosage forms which are unprofitable to market due to low demand.
However, there is still the occasional need for such products. Perhaps a
veterinary formulation is unavailable, and for one reason or another, the
human preparation just won’t do. We can obtain the necessary pharmaceutical
grade chemicals, and from them compound individ ualized dosage forms that
may even be superior to the discontinued formulation for use in a particular
animal.
Combination needed?
The ideal preparation may need to contain
several ingredients to treat a variety of symptoms. For example, an animal
may have skin problems that do not respond to a single-ingredient
preparation. Yet using three medicines from separate containers can be
inconvenient and costly. We can compound the needed concentrations of all
three medications into a single, easy-to-use preparation. In a similar
manner, we can prepare solutions containing more than one medication for
delivery by nebulizer.
Novel Devices and Delivery Systems
In addition to customized medications, we
offer a variety of unique dispensing devices to simplify administration and
improve compliance. For example, oral and topical syringes provide a simple
means of accurately measuring and administering medication, and are
particularly useful when the dose is fluctuating. Accordion-like puffers are
ideal for applying powder to difficult-to-reach areas like the ear canal. A
dauber bottle is excellent for topical application, such as painting
medication on a hoof. Sustained release dosage forms can also be compounded.
